Since its founding in 1946, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation (TWF), then the Tennessee Conservation League (TCL), has been a contributor to many accomplishments in the field of conservation in the State of Tennessee.
Since its founding in 1946, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation (TWF), then the Tennessee Conservation Federation (TWF), has been a contributor to many accomplishments in the field of conservation in the State of Tennessee. The following list highlights only a portion of these accomplishments: - Sponsored legislation that created the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission in 1949
- Sponsored legislation in 1974 that formed the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA)
- TWF has partnered with TWRA and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to bring elk back to Tennessee. The new herd is roaming free and approaching 200 animals. By the end of 2008 we expect herd numbers to be approximately 250 or more.
- Joined effort to restore the bald eagle population in Tennessee
- Partnered with TWRA to build a public wildlife viewing area in East Tennessee
- Created and still manages the Tennessee Hunters for the Hungry Program, a partnership between TWF and TWRA to fight hunger in Tennessee by distributing properly processed venison to hunger relief organizations across the state. The Program has distributed approximately 181,000 pounds of venison, thus creating 725,000 meals for Tennessee hunger relief programs.
- Developed the Tennessee Sportsman’s Leadership Summit to bring together the leaders of hunting and fishing organizations from across the state in an effort to identify ways to enhance Tennessee’s land, water, wildlife and ensure the future of Tennessee’s sporting heritage
- Instrumental in the writing and passage of the Wetlands Conservation Act of 1988 and the State Solid Waste Act of 1991
- The Federation has partnered with hunting, fishing, scouting and outdoor organizations across the state to enhance youth outdoor programs.
- Awarded a grant to partner with the Pinchot Institute for Conservation in an effort to engage the environmental and forest industry communities in a dialogue focused upon sustainable forest management across Tennessee
- Advocated a balanced aquatic vegetation management plan on Chickamauga and Nickajack Lakes that protects aquatic habitat and vegetation
- Helped pass legislation to protect Tennessee’s water supply from surrounding states TWF helped pass legislation to create the Deer Management Assistance Program so that TWRA has flexibility in helping landowners manage deer herds on private property.
- The Federation helped pass legislation to halt actions of those "bad actors" in Tennessee who damage Tennessee’s water and land by not using forestry best management practices.
- TWF has advocated helping our state acquire over 105,000 acres of land for public use in the past four years.
