To address this issue and ensure the future of hunting in Tennessee, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation (TWF) and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) are conducting a one year pilot project called the Walk-In Hunting Access Program. (WHAP).
Most hunters began as youngsters hunting small game such as quail, rabbits and squirrels. For the most part, this is still how most of today’s young hunters learn the basics of hunting. However, this new generation of young hunters faces a problem that earlier generations did not: lack of lands available for small game hunting.
To address this issue and ensure the future of hunting in Tennessee, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation (TWF) and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) are conducting a one year pilot project called the Walk-In Hunting Access Program. (WHAP).
Eligibility
There is a limited amount of funding allocated for WHAP. Landowners will be accepted to the program until all allocated funds are used. Priority will be given to lands with higher quality small game habitat.
Acceptable lands can be no smaller than 50 acres and will include fields and non-forested lands that have wildlife friendly grass cover. The priority of WHAP is land for small game hunting but applications for hunting of other game species grounds will be considered.
Contracts are available for terms of 1 year or November 2004 through February 2005.
Participation
If you choose to open your farmland to walk-in hunters, you will be paid for your participation by the TWF and TWRA. This means that you can realize additional income from your farmland with very little or no additional work!
Should you decide to open your land to WHAP, you may also be eligible for additional compensation to make habitat improvements utilizing CRP, WHIP and FWHP.
Signs will be provided and placed by TWF personnel to designate WHAP lands. Remember this is a walk-in program only and no motorized vehicles will be allowed. |
